Edgar John Van Allsburg

Edgar John Van Allsburg, a confection researcher and 40-year resident of Bedford, died Tuesday at Northern Westchester Hospital Center in Mount Kisco. He was 68.

Mr. Van Allsburg was a researcher, consultant and chemist in the confectionary food industry. He first worked for A.E. Staley Co., then joined the research department of Hershey Foods in Hershey, Pa. Mr. Van Allsburg was a consultant to Henry Heide Inc., a candy manufacturer in New Jersey.

Mr. Van Allsburg was born Aug. 21, 1919, in Hart, Mich., to John Neal and Edna Hicks Van Allsburg. He grew up in Hart and attended local schools. He graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering.

During the 1940s, Mr. Van Allsburg moved to Chattanooga, Tenn., where he continued his education at the University of Tennessee and the University of Chattanooga. He worked in local bakeries.

Mr. Van Allsburg married Harriet Shumway on his birthday in 1943.

In 1947, the Van Allsburgs moved to Bedford Village. He was on the Bedford Board of Education from 1960 to 1965 and was president for the 1964-1965 school year. He was a former member and director of the Bedford Village Lions Club, a past president of the Bedford Village Memorial Field Association, and a member and past president of the Bedford Village Chowder and Marching Society. He belonged to the Pennsylvania Confectionary Association.

In addition to his wife of Bedford and his father of Melbourne, Fla., Mr. Van Allsburg is survived by two sons, John of Purdys and Arthur of North Salem; a sister, Gloria Tierney of Melbourne, and four grandchildren.
